Yep. Tommy Aker is well known as a reputable aftermarket salvager and refurbisher in the air horn community. I believe, based on conversations with others, that his main sources for horns was the Cycle Systems scrap yard in Roanoke, Va., which used to get N&W/SR/NS junk after the N&W shops swapped out junk horns for functioning ones. Hadn't heard that he moved to South Carolina, but his relationship with Cycle may be good enough that he loads up a truck every now and then, I guess. He supposedly has a good and honest reputation; I've never heard him accused of theft or anything, although like any aftermarket dealer what he pays and what he sells for have to be driven by profit. For the record, I inquired in several locomotive "recyclers" in the South about used horns on a recent trip; the going prices sharply reflect eBay prices. |
