The Lancaster County (PA) Planning Commission reports last month that it has awarded Stone Consulting $25,000 to study the feasibility of reintroducing trolley service to Lancaster city. Conestoga Traction ended trolley service there in 1947. The study will consider a closed loop system beginning at the Amtrak station (nee PRR) with track heading south on either Duke or Prince Streets. The track will loop through Penn Square before heading north on Queen Street and back to the station. IMHO, The route should work well as it passes by a number of trip generators: Lancaster General Hospital, minor league baseball stadium, courthouse, historic farmers market, and arts and entertainment district. Needless to say, we're not going to say a whole lot at this point, but I will confirm the study. It was first considered back in 2001, but 9/11 happened right about the time it was to be released. There's a wonderful heritage of streetcars in the town, on the same routes we are considering. A portion of the original trolley platform is still visible at the Amtrak station. Wire hangars are still plainly visible downtown. Stay tuned. |
