I can't speak authoritavely about those 4 Baldwins, but I know they have been sitting in that deadline about 5 years. And from I was able to tell the last time I crawled over them, they had been there for many years before that.

There are some images of those locomotives pulling trains at Crane on the walls in some of the offices that appear to be Vietnam War era.

I'm going to venture a guess and say they have always been owned by the Navy.

The Navy used to have a lot of Baldwins scattered around their weapon's stations, so Baldwin may have won a contract to supply a standard switcher in the 50s or early 60s.

Post subject:  Low miles?

The miles quoted in the descriptions seem so low to me, but maybe they're not low for switchers. Also, I'd imagine there is much sitting and idling involved. Perhaps a better measure of use would be hours, like heavy equipment?

Crane Ind, has a 150 odd miles of RR, so there is certainly room to get around, but you're right, engine hours would make more sense at an operation like that.

Also, I wouldn't put to much credence in mileage or similar numbes quoted by GovLiquidation. No telling how many times the odomoter has rolled. I suspect we're lucky that they ID'ed them as locomotives. :-)

Please give me a call to purchase old, run-down locos with only military history!
