FLYING YANKEE RESTORATION / MOVE UPDATE

We’re sorry to have to report that the Flying Yankee has still not been moved to Lincoln, NH. In fact, the staff at the NHDOT are still hard at work sorting out administrative issues that need to be resolved prior to the Flying Yankee being moved to Lincoln. With any luck, these unfortunate issues will be resolved in the very near future so we can all look forward to moving on with Phase II of the Flying Yankee’s restoration.

In the meantime, we’re researching possible vendors who will be able to refurbish the Flying Yankee’s trucks after the train has been moved to Lincoln and investigating possible manufacturers who could supply potential diesel power plants to replace the EMD Winton 201A.

Rest assured though, as soon as the NHDOT resolves the administrative issues they’re having to deal with and we have the details regarding the date & time of the move and the exact route the O.B. Hill trucks and trailers will be taking, we’ll be sure to let you know through an E-mail. For now though, the Flying Yankee remains buttoned up for the winter in Claremont.

FLYING YANKEE TO BE REPRESENTED AT 2005 LINCOLN ZEPHYR GATHERING IN JUNE

We’d like to let everyone know of an exciting event taking place at Stratton Mountain in Vermont this coming June 15-19, 2005. It’s the national Lincoln Zephyr gathering, also known as Lincolns On The Mountain III. The Flying Yankee Restoration Group was represented at last year’s event in Pennsylvania and we’ve been invited to attend this year’s event at Stratton Mountain as well. This event will attract some of the finest Lincoln Zephyr automobiles in the world! If you’ve never had the pleasure to see a Lincoln Zephyr, you really should try to make it to this event on Friday, June 17th. Built in the late 1930’s and 1940’s, these elegant cars have long, sweeping lines and are famous for their smooth running V-12 engines. On Friday, June 17th, there will be a Concour D’Elegance at Stratton Mountain where these beautiful Lincoln Zephyrs will be on display for the public to enjoy. We’ll also be giving a presentation on the history of the Flying Yankee at Stratton Mountain during the weekend as well as an update on the Flying Yankee’s restoration and we’ll have Flying Yankee collectibles available for purchase at the event as well. FLYING YANKEE SILVER NUGGET



This month, we’re going to discuss the Flying Yankee’s very unique engine, the Winton 201A 2-stroke diesel. We recently received a wonderful packet of info from Mr. John Holman of Hampton, NH, filled with many Flying Yankee-related articles. In this packet, was an article titled: The Development Of Rudolph Diesel’s Invention written by Mr. Carl R. Byron for the 1983/1984 winter edition of the B&M Bulletin. The segment below is an excerpt from this article:



The B&M / Maine Central Flying Yankee, essentially a copy of the Zephyr, arrived in February 1935, and was immediately put to work on a daily 730-mile Portland-Boston/Boston-Bangor-Boston/Boston-Portland schedule. Feeding torque into its main generator was GM’s latest: the Winton 201A in-line-8, capable of 600 horsepower. Although basically derived from Winton’s marine applications, the 201A heralded several of the technical innovations that would propel EMD (Electro Motive Division) into becoming the largest and most successful Diesel manufacturer in the world. It incorporated the Root blower to force adequate air into each cylinder through several ports simultaneously. Being a two-cycle design, each stroke was a power stroke, so fuel was injected on every revolution. Rather than use a high-pressure pump and prone-to-leak fuel lines (as did ALCO and later, Baldwin), GM Engineers developed the ingenious unit fuel injector. This spark plug-shaped unit, roughly 15 inches in length, automatically measured fuel, and through a plunger and barrel mechanism, forced it into the cylinders at pressures upwards of 12,000 PSI, guaranteeing instantaneous combustion. All the technical tools for the conquest of steam were now at least rudimentally developed.



FLYING YANKEE ARTCLES ARE POPPING UP EVERYWHERE



What a great feeling to see articles on the Flying Yankee popping up here and there, all over the region! On Wednesday, March 2, 2005, the Salmon Press (www.salmonpress.com) was nice enough to run a terrific article on the Flying Yankee written by well-known NH columnist and publisher, John Harrigan, in 8 of their 9 weekly newspapers, as well as place a live link on their web site! The article was printed in the North Country Notebook sections of all but one of the Salmon Press’s nine weekly newspapers. If you haven’t had the opportunity to enjoy John’s article on the Flying Yankee, be sure you visit the Flying Yankee’s web site at www.flyingyankee.com and you’ll see it listed under the NEWS section on our front page.



We also want to thank Mr. John M. Holman of Hampton, NH for placing two photographs of the Flying Yankee taken during its move from So. Carver, MA to Glen, NH in 1993 and some information about the current restoration and the Flying Yankee’s web site in the recent edition of the Atlantic News weekly newspaper that’s distributed in the seacoast region of New Hampshire!



FLYING YANKEE E-NEWSLETTER LIST CONTINUES TO GROW



The E-Newsletter participant list continues to grow – even after a complete year. We’re now sending the Friends of the Flying Yankee E-Newsletter to 452 friends and contributors across the United States, as well as four countries outside the USA, including Canada, Australia and Holland, and now England – that’s an increase of 33 subscribers in the past month alone. To give you an idea of just how fast this E-Newsletter’s database has been growing, we started this monthly publication in March of 2004 with only 33 subscribers – we’ve added a whopping 419 subscribers to the list since that very first issue! Thank you to everyone for your ongoing support and interest in the Flying Yankee’s restoration.
