A former train station in York was heavily damaged by fire early this
afternoon.

The York Benevolent Association building at 246 West College Avenue was
heavily involved in fire when firefighters arrived.

The building served as a railroad station during the civil war, bringing
wounded soldiers to York for treatment at hospitals set up in Penn
Common.

Dammit, Bob, I had a nightmare of the York, England station's long curved trainshed somehow ablaze!

The "station" in question is down on the former Northern Central just south of the section of Pershing Street with street trackage. If you ever saw photos of PRR 1361 running in the street in 1988 or photos of PRR or PC passenger trains on the York street trackage, this building was just to the south of this stretch by a block or so, as the track angled off to the southwest. There's apparently some considerable discussion or debate as to whether this was truly a rail station. If it was, it bore similarities in style to the preserved Hanover Junction station to its south. It was not listed on the Stations of Pa. database, nor had it been mentioned in any of the "definitive" histories of the area or line.

Considering how much the building had been altered over the decades, and that this station status is somewhat under dispute, I wouldn't fret too much about it. After all, York STILL has FIVE other extant stations (two PRR/NC, two WM, and one Ma & Pa).
