Just wondering about something here. How does your organization count passengers? Do you count a round trip fare as 1 passenger or 2 passengers (2 one way fares)? |

Dear Mark: The Valley Railroad (Essex Steam Train & Riverboat) counts each rider once, regardless of whether they take the train or the train & boat combination (of course for accounting and marketing purposes we keep track of the breakdown). We also count "complimentary" riders: children under 3, bus drivers, tour guides and the like. J.David |

At SVRy our train crews count the passengers on each train. There are 3 round trips in a normal days operation, but as passengers can board from either end of the line some riding one way and others buying round trip tickets, there are by timetable 6 trains ea. day. So for the purpose of calculating passenger miles for FRA there are 6 train totals to add together, with round trip pass. getting counted both ways. I assume the depot agents can come up with a tally of actual distinct riders per day based on ticket sales. |

We count tickets sold at Strasburg regardless of ticket class. One ticket, one person.http://www.strasburgrailroad.com |

SCRM counts a round trip as one person since our ride is purely out-and-back with no one-way fare possible. We don't include member deadheads and babies-in-arms in the tallies. Even after we start letting people off in Rion (maybe 2006 or 2007), I doubt we'll count riders any differently, although the present all-reserved seat system will almost certainly have to change. |

The Heber Valley Railroad tickets all passengers, regardless of ticket type, through a third-party ticketing system. Although children under the age of three are not ticketed (or counted), all other comps and discounted tickets are accounted for. Craig Lacey |

At Pacific Southwest Railway Museum - Campo Railroad Museum - we count all passengers on each train - but - we go out and back and don't double count them. |

As an former Grand Canyon Railwayemployee my understanding is for trains to and from the Grand Canyon they count every body north bound and southbound separately. Polar passsengers are counted once for the round trip. There are different totals at the GCR for northbound and southbound. The Nevada Northen counts people for a round trip. I would like to see how the C&TS does their counting considering the Part way and one way with bus return options? Robby |

Since Steamtown NHS sells all tickets as round trip, we only count when leaving the Scranton yard. In fifteen years working there, I only remember one case of stowaways boarding. |
