Former LV tug "Cornell", somewhat astray from home on the Sassafras River in Galena, Md., up for sale:

Hmmmm, does the RR Museum of Pa. need a different railroad exhibit?

Actually --- the price isn't all that bad, given the described condition. She looks pretty well maintained -- and for someone telling the larger marine-rail story on the east coast, would make some real sense.

To give you a comparable --- we were quoted a price of over $300,000 for what remained of the Pere Marquette #10, which is no longer prefectly water tight, has every window on board busted out, and has been unable to move with out a tug since her Skinner Uniflow was rendered inoperable in 1974 (she was convered to TB/ carfloat operation).

This old girl seems ready for paint and to conduct your water-born railyard "three-hour" tours! Where's Ted on this one?

This is a very good price for a railroad tug, in spite of the liabilities (DC power and the 278A). I wonder what a thorough survey would disclose.

Railroad tugs are the unsung heroes of rail history and preservation. They continue in revenue service some 50 or 60 years after their launchings with the same prime mover or original-to-type engine as launched. I was aboard a railroad tug last week that, with a few modifications, retained the "dayboat" layout of its launching day. FM opposed; bells for bell-boat operation; etc. (Okay, I'm drooling. I'll admit it.) Would that we had the ability to preserve and maintain them.
