In going through the list given by Bob Yarger in the last "Spence" thread, I saw the following Texas & Pacific engines: #472 0-6-0 #478 0-6-0 #700 4-6-2 #800 2-8-2 #810 2-8-2 Boy, this seems particularly sad, as only (to my knowledge anyway) two other T&P survived the scrapper: T&P 316 & T&P 610, both at Texas State Railroad at Palestine, Texas display. In doing some further research, though, I found something of interest to you streamline steam fans ---- #700 was once semi-streamlined! Wonder if that had been stripped of this before Spence got ahold of her? Picture from the T&P website of #700 below: TJ Gaffney |

Greetings: No, it wasn't streamlined when it was scrapped, but it was freshly painted in T&P blue and grey. Richand Jensen of GTW 5629 fame was, prior to purchasing steam locomotives, a master (read perfectionist) roster shot photographer. He roamed the south in an old auto, the back seat of which was filled large white tarps which he would drape from buildings and/or trees to provide an uncluttered background for his photographs (the tarps also served as his mattess when not in use). Jensen would talk railroads into posing locomotives "rods down" at dawn or sunset when the light was to his liking. If the sun didn't co-operate, he would wait, sometimes for days, to get his shot. Jensen shot all of the Spence locomotives at Amite, LA. Knowing that the T&P pacific had been blue, Jensen talked Spence into letting him paint it. Using house paint, Jensen gave the locomotive a quick "broom job", made T&P emblems out of wood and made his photograph. Spence came down to see the locomotive and was dismayed to find that Jensen had only painted only one side of it! He ended up paying Jensen to paint the other side as well. J.David |

JDC: What happened to Dick Jensen's negs? Do any exist? Sounds like he was very much the classic roster shooter in the same mold as Charlie Felstead, Bob Foster, etc. Once again, the Jensen saga is full of interesting turns-- and it intersected with the Spence story. The full story of both these men really ought to be researched and told. HP |

I just so hard to believe no one got shots of all of these engines demise. I mean, I realize at the time there were locos biting the dust everywhere, but I have to think if it made TRAINS, someone made it down to the aftermath. Someone mentioned that Blunt sent some people down for parts after the onslaught --- anybody know where they went? TJG |
