I got into a discussion yesterday about the CNJ's water tower and track pans near Dunellen, NJ. Having grown up near the NY&LB, I knew the PRR and CNJ had used pans, and I've seen some pretty dramatic pictures of water flying back from the tender scoops. It dawned on me today that I have never heard any audio of what a engine scooping water on the fly sounded like. Is there any out there? I would imagine the scoop skimmed along the top of the water, to minimize the drag of it going deep. Even so, I would espect there was some hogger-trickery which would compliment the sound of the displaced water. Seems like this is one of those steam-era daily events I'll never see in person. Shure would like to it, though. Rob |

A British movie made towards the end of steam on express trains depicts has an A4 (Silver Link or Silver Fox perhaps?) taking on water. Hard to hear above the noise of the engine, but it sounds like a big spray of water. Joshua |

I seem to remember seeing a video on track pans showing than the tank would often get too much water and would vent (sometimes violently) out the top of the tank. This would only be a problem when the occasional "non-paying passenger" would be riding the tank. I don't remember any part of it playing audio however. |
