Doubleheaded Garratts in New South Wales. I know at least one Garratt survived down there, but not sure if either of these did.

Four 60 class have been preserved: 6029 by the ARHS Canberra, 6039 and 6042 by the Dorrigo Steam Railway and Museum and 6040 by the NSWRTM at Thirlmere, though, regrettably, none is in running condition

for a brief history see http://eureka.m.bigpondhosting.com/Garratt.html

There are also preserved (non-operational) examples of South Australian Garrats (2x), one from Queensland, an Australian Standard Garratt , and in Victoria, an industrial unit and the operational G42 at the Puffing Billy Railway - and a South African NGG16 also at PBR

For more detail of the operational 2'6" garratt G42 at the Puffing Billy Railway visit www.puffingbilly.com.au There are also a couple of photos of it (taken 1 may 05) at www.photosportive.net

It re-entered service in April 2004 after a loooong rebuild and has operated on more than 280 days this past year. At the begining of May 2005 it was withdrawn for a routine 12 month maintenence examination and is expected to be back in traffic sometime in June.

Our 2' gauge South African NGG16 is currently stored in a dismantled state. We are doing some early testing and project planning work with a view to starting a rebuild and re-gauging project (to 2'6") in the next few years so that it is operating by circa 2010 - 2011 (when G42 will be due to be withdrawn for a major 10-year overhaul).
