Upcoming trip this Saturday, from the D&H list: A group of us will be meeting on Saturday 04-23-05 near Carbondale, PA to explore some of the remains of structures of the Delaware and Hudson Gravity Railroad. WE WILL MEET AT 10 AM SHARP AT THE PARK-AND0RIDE LOT, WHICH IS JUST OFF EXIT #6 ON ROUTE 6 IN CARBONDALE (MERIDITH STREET EXIT). We will be exploring the famous "Shepherd's Crook" area, which was constructed between 1866 and 1868 to re-route the D&H Gravity light track between Fairview and Carbondale. We will be exploring some of the old D&H Gravity RR lift planes, and some of the old foundations for the buildings that housed the steam engines. We are fortunate that Chris Murley of Underground Miners will be along to show us some of the things that he has spotted from the air (www.undergroundminers.com). Also along with us will be Tom Gibson, an expert on the history of the D&H and PCC Gravity RR's. Hopefully, we can explore a tunnel vault that carries the stream through a tunnel, and we are hoping to take a brief side trip to the old power plant for the Coal Brook Colliery which is still standing - just barely. I think we can finalize the plans when we meet at the park and ride lot at 10 AM Saturday. Bring sturdy footwear and work gloves to protect hands and feet. Bring raingear. If you have walkie-talkies (FRS / GMRS) please charge them up and bring all that you have to share with others for the day. Bring water, lots of water. Weather is calling for temperatures in the upper 40's and low 50's, so it will be a good day to walk around, but bring water. If there is HEAVY rain we will not do this exploration on April 23, but some of us might still meet up and do something else or explore something else. Right now, Accu-Weather is calling for clouds, but other forecasts are calling for rain. From the book "Of pulleys and ropes and gear": "In order to provide a gentle and uniform grade for this light track on the west side of the mountain, Shepard and Manville laid out a loop approximately 2,000 feet long and 400 feet wide, cut into the mountain on its upper side and built out on an embankment on its lower side.
