Though captioned as a DW&P loco, this Norfolk & Western 4-8-0, presumably on its way to scrap in 1953 at Glassport, PA, trails what looks like a USRA tender. Did these tenders come from the N&W 4-8-2s? http://abpr.railfan.net/abprphoto.cgi?d ... +s1140.jpg |

Bob, "Musical" tenders was quite common on the N&W. That tender does appear to be a USRA 10,000 gal. originally from a K2. Two of these have survived, one behind 475 at Strasburg, the other behind sister "M" 433 in Abingdon, Va. The M2's carried several classes of tenders over the years, they were built with N&W design 9000 gal. tenders, and later carried USRA 10,000 and 12,000 tenders, and N&W 12,000 gal. six-axle tenders. Some received N&W 15,000 gal tenders that were longer than the locomotives. |

The 433 M Class in Abingdon technically is a half-sister to the 475. The 433 was constructed by Alco Richmond, while the 475 was a Baldwin product. The N&W however made no distinction through sub-class identification. |
