Post subject:  Rock Island 938

Now at Illinois Railway Museum, via Texas and Oklahoma, a rare shot of this 4-6-2 on Train No. 7, the Rocky Mountain Limited, west of Limon, Colorado on April 2, 1939. This is probably the Colorado Springs section, as the train is short. This was the last year for coalburning on the CRI&P's Western Division, and the last year for the Rocky Mountain Limited. Train No. 7 would become the Rocky Mountain Rocket that year, with streamlined Budd cars and an elegant red/maroon/silver E3 unit on the head end. The 938 would remain a coalburner and be resent east, ending its days in Chicago commuter service in 1953, one of the last RI engines to operate.
