Hello Forum Members, The Railroad Museum of Long Island (RMLI) is pleased to announce the successful awarding of contracts on April 8, 2005 to begin work using an $800,000.00 ISTEA grant to continue restoration of LIRR G5s Locomotive #39. Suffolk County, New York is the local government sponsor and is responsible for 20% of the grant. Work commenced Friday, April 29th at Riverhead, NY by the successful bidder, Boilermatic Welding Industries Corp. of Medford, NY. Work on 39's boiler and tender will take place at their shops. The Railroad Museum, under the direction of Project Engineer Rob Mangles will complete restoration of the drivetrain and oil burner at RMLI's Riverhead Restoration site. The Strasburg Rail Road Mechanical Department has been retained by Boilermatic to consult on the restoration project, provide engineering services as needed and fabricate any unique parts that may be needed. In January 1924, the Pennsylvania Railroad began building class G-5 locomotives for the Long Island Railroad (LIRR). In 1929, #39 through #50 arrived on Long Island. These Ten-Wheelers provided the bulk of LIRR’s passenger motive power until dieselization in 1955. LIRR G-5s #39 primarily served the Oyster Bay branch in Nassau County. She was the last steam engine to travel to Greenport in June 1955, and was one of two steam engines participating in the LIRR’s official "End of Steam" ceremony on October 8, 1955 in Hicksville. Good luck on the project. Once when I was talking with Rob Mangels, he mentioned that the scope of work (on another steam locomotive) is determined by what the owner wants to do with the engine. I remember that the RMLI wanted to run this regularly to Greenport on the North Fork of the island, but will this be the case when the job is finished? I'm certain that everyone on this list is looking forward to this achievement. When completed, this 4-6-0 will be the largest operating steam engine in New York State. |

There are a lot of dedicated people working on the 39, so I wouldn't worry about her being strung out over a long period of time. A great deal of the running gear has already been refurbished by the RMLI volunteers. The Museum collection also includes the RS-3 and the two coaches that were the companion pieces in the handover ceremonies in October, 1955. Not many other museums can boast of that, except The Friends of G5s #35, the sister G5 on Long Island! They have the coaches and steam locomotive, while the RS-3, #1555 is getting a new lease on life elsewhere in the country. The goal for #35 is to have it running as well, but not in this same restorartion time frame as #39. There will be heavy Belpaire steam operating soon. Assuming the K4s and G5s are able to travel, we might (I am projecting here) see double headed passenger steam of the Pennsy kind once again. |

I add my congratulations and wish the project the best of good luck! I'm confident that with Rob Mengels involved it will be a well run project and will not be a repeat performance of the sad story of the "other" Belpaire boilered loco. Rob at least knows what he knows and knows where to go for what he doesn't know! Ross Rowland |
