I was just given a crosby fluid pressure scale by a retired railroader It has a scale and a place to put different gages It appears to be quite old It is mounted in a large wooden box He told me that is was used to check gages for locomotives and brakes Any info?[/list]

Sounds like a dead weight tester for gauges. I'm sure the Strasburg and other folks could elaborate more. We had one in St. Albans, but I never noted who made it.

I suspect most steam gauge mfgrs. made (or make) dead weight testers for calibrating gauges. The one we have at SVRy is made by Star Brass. There should be a platform to put weights on that are marked in lbs. The gauge to be tested is put in place, and pressure applied by a piston that moves in a tube by way of a crank and screw to reduce the internal volume inside the tester, it being filled with oil. The oil being noncompressable lift the weights on the platform which also has a piston and once the platform is raised a little, the gauge should show the pressure corresponding to the weights. Actually, you should spin the weights slowly while taking a reading to insure there is no binding of the piston part below the platform. With out tester, the platform itself counts as 5lbs. Testing the air and steam gauges in this manner is part of yearly locomotive inspection. I wish I could find a set of weights on the cheap or donated for the rr's tester, as it does not have a weight set and I actually used my own this year which is identical to the rr's.

Me too - everyboody saved the nice brass testers but scrapped the iron weights. I could use a set for my tester.
