Chopped off photo of Alaska RR F7 1508, which I think was the last F7 built. The Alaska Fs were a bit unusual in that they had the batteries inside the carbody instead of underneath, to prevent freezing in the -60F temperatures. A consortium bought several of them in the 1980s when the ARR retired the units and they spent some time at Portola, California before moving on. A couple were wrecked in shortline use in Idaho and scrapped after. One of the investors brought this one back to Massachusetts and applied a new prime mover, but the flywheel was the incorrect one to mate with the generator, so it was shipped up to our shop in St. Albans. As our overhead crane would not clear taking the engine out of the carbody, a mobile crane was hired, the correct flywheel applied and the locomotive made operable again. Thus, it was the only F unit I ever ran, from the backshop to the turntable and sand tower and back. Last I heard, it was still running on the Adirondack Scenic RR in NY State. According to the caption, this poor photo was taken at Falcon, Colorado on the Cadillac & Lake City RR, the former Colorado Springs branch of the Rock Island. I was not aware that it had operated there.

There are a couple of photos of this unit in the May 2005 issue of TRAINS, in the article about the Adirondack Scenic Railroad. Starts on page 40.
