SP M of W locomotive, originally a 2-6-2ST (I think here, an 0-6-2T). My number listings don't show the extant one as 566, however. Is this it or another one?

What an unusual looking tank engine! I don't think it survived; I have not seen anything even remotely resembling it in any survivor's lists.

The one now at Sacramento is CP 233, which is still a 2-6-2T.

Forgive my ignorance; I have never seen this critter before, and had it listed at the Niles Canyon RY Museum.

I understand that California State Railroad Museum and Pacific Locomotive Association made a trade that resulted in the Sacramento Shop built commuter 2-6-2T going back to Sacramento. I cann't recall the year orwhat elese was traded.

Previously on display in Oakland with a robust diamond stack before the PLA got it. I believe the trade with the CSRM involved some Harriman cars. I'd presume it's currently in storage where it was built more than 115 years ago; the Sacramento Shops.

There was another of the Stevens-built 2-6-2Ts (used for commuter service in Oakland prior to electrification) that was still in use as a shop switcher (quite hacked over, and an 0-6-0 or 0-6-2 by this time) at Bayshore or Mission Bay if I recall into the 30s or 40s. Another apparently found its way to the Tidewater Southern, which Eugene Vicknair has been searching for information on.

Sorry if my post came across as rude, didn't mean to me. The CP 233 was moved sometime last year or late in 2003 to the CSRM in trade for 2 SP commuter coaches and a large milling machine. Before the PLA got her, she was sitting in an Oakland park.

The locomotive now owned by the CSRM does in fact look just like the pictured loco. These were homebuilt "commuter" locomotives.

You were right this commuter loco was owned by the Pacific Loco Assoc operators of the Niles canyon Rwy, but they traded her to the California State RR Museum a year or two ago. She was one of two surviving locos built in their Sacramento Shop building.

The only other commuter engine I know about is the IC 201 recently purchased by the Illinois Railway Museum.

Further to what I said above; the SP East Bay Division was steam powered until 1911 when it was converted to electric traction in responce to the Key system operations.

At Rio Vista there are some of the bodies of the electric Intrerurban cars.
Known as "Big Red Cars" the SP ran electric equipment in Portland, East BAy, NWP and were going to convert the SF to San Jose line, but the Depression interveined.

Then that also had the Pacific Electric down in Southern California.
