I am sad to report to the railway preservation world that Herbert L. Broadbelt has passed away. Broadbelt was a former Baldwin employee who saved the famed negative collection of the Baldwin Locomotive Works from destruction in the 1950's. The 18,500 negatives were purchased from Mr. Broadbelt by the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in 1988. He resided in Newport News, Va.

I'm sorry to hear about Mr. Broadbelt. It's a pity there weren't more people like him around in the 1950's to save other similar items that got tossed out in the trash.
