Recent news says that the ax-wielders at Norfolk Southern will close or consolidate 10 yard and repair facilities before giving themselves huge buyouts. Anyone have ideas of which these might be? Any historic facilities like Williamson, WV or Bellvue, OH? The only one I've heard mentioned so far is the Holidaysburg Car Shop in PA. Railway Preservation News ryarger1@nycap.rr.com |

I don't know about Williamson, WV, but I had heard that Bellevue was to get the axe within the two years or so. T.J. Port Huron Museum peremarquette@hotmail.com |

Last I heard Hollidaysburg had received a reprieve becasue NS management had promised to an influential PA congressman that the shop would stay open during the merger review. eledbetter@rypn.org |

Last I heard, Bellvue still had its complete, modern roundhouse, used by M-of-W forces. A good place for rusting Berkshires, 2-8-2s, 0-6-0s, a 4-6-4, GP9s and so on..... Has anybody at the Mad River & NKP Railroad Museum approached NS about taking over this site after it comes out of railroad use? Of course there is over a century of hydrocarbon contamination of the soil, however, there are new non-invasive methods that are being developed to deal with this. In addition, as the Minnesota Transportation Museum is demonstrating with their Jackson Roundhouse Project, conversions such as this can be made into reality without the massive reconstruction required at Steamtown NPS. (Jackson Street Roundhouse http://www.mtmuseum.org/railroad/jsr-museum.html ) Furthermore, as the 1950 picture shows, this roundhouse is on the outskirts of a yard, which would ease visitor access. It would be a great place to house their existing locomotive collection, as well as other steam and diesel locomotives, and it could be developed into a site that would present a most accurate picture of railroading between 1940 and 1960. Would Doyle McCormack consider relocating to here from the Brooklyn roundhouse with his restored PA? In any case, lets continue to discuss this and to bring more information to this forum. We should not let this one get away because of lacking or misinformation. Tom Mad River & NKP Railroad Museum |

There is even more information on the Mad River & NKP Railroad Museum, Bellevue as a NKP hub, and surviving NKP locomotives at http://nkprr.railfan.net/destinations.html (link below) John Fryar's NKP Page |

IMO, one way to keep NS from looking favorably upon preserving or donating the place is to slap them over the head with terms like "ax wielders" and cheap shots about buy-outs. No matter how true such sentiments might be, they certainly will not make those guys feel good about us. Bob, I thought you had more class and foresight than that. You must have been in a particularly sour mood when you wrote the first post. |

Whatever the merits, or lack there of, of Bob's comments, at least, per our rules and guidelines, he uses his real name and gives his e-mail address. You're right. Bad choice of words. Having had the ax wielded on myself in the past, however, does tend to color one's views. Fortunately, some of those who swung the ax got their own heads cut off later. Bellvue 1951 ryarger1@nycap.rr.com |

Yeah, I think this forum is above name calling, don't you? Besides, its guys like Bob who, in my opinion, who put the "preservation" in L&RP. TJ Port Huron Museum ![]() peremarquette@hotmail.com |
