I guess I must have called up this site a couple of hundred times by now. I wonder if the crossing buck that is swinging at the start makes a noise? Isn't it supposed to have a bell ringing?

If it does why is AOL.com not telling me? Ted

No, the wig-wag doesn't have a bell.

It could, but it would increase download times, and I think sites that make noise are annoying. (Some iron souled individuals don't even like the animation for that reason.)

Any comments?

If anyone was to -- horrors at the thought -- look at Railway Preservation News during the work day, they would not want to have the boss walk in while the bell was ringing.

In consideration of such enthusiastic (or depraved) preservationists, let's keep it silent.

For all these reasons, and more, I say leave it alone. We don't need sound effects.

Thanks for the informaaation guys! I know what you mean. There is a 24" railroad site that has a steam whistle on its opening frame. It has been known to startle my felow workers. And I work in a museum!

A couple of years ago, a girlfriend got me one of those wall clocks with the CP 1246 on the face of it. After listening to all of those simulated sound effects while trying to enjoy my favorite movies, I finally had to remove the battery that provided power for the effects. Sometimes, silence is golden.

Put a piece of black (or at least semi-opaque) tape over the "spot" above the "12" to reduce the light intensity to the photocell in it. Won't be so loud that way.

Now if we could just get somebody to make a clock with excellent sound effects, (not edited together so willy-nilly) and have the sounds tied to the hour so you can tell the time by the sound. I realize that 12 whistle blows for noon/midnight would be annoying, but maybe with a combination of longs and shorts one could tell the hour without too long of a sound session.

My wife's brother and sister-in-law gave me the same clock for Christmas, 1999. They were walking through a department store, and my nephew heard it, and all three decided it was the perfect gift for me. I love it. The photo cell is perfect because the clock doesn't wake me up at night, and I enjoy the train sounds during the day. My wife doesn't mind it too much.

I agree, it has some really great sounds. Just too random to have any meaning as to the hour.

I actually have two of them; a very good friend gave me one as a Christmas gift and my daughter gave me another one the same Christmas.

The only real problem I have with the volume is that I have one mounted right over the phone and if it goes off when I'm on the phone I can't hear the person talking to! :-)))

That's funny, I have two of them also. I received one from my sister-in-law last christmas. It kept wakeing up the baby, so my wife made me take it down for a while. My sister then spotted one at a store and just had to get it for me this christmas. I didn't have the heart to tell her that I already had one as she was so excited in giving it to me.

I managed to get my two timed right, along with my mantle clock so they go off in sequence...the one in the dining room first, then the one in the living room, then the mantle clock strikes the hour. When the lights are on bright, I'm in heaven!
