The British are doing it so why can't the Americans? They're over there building another Tornado, so it is possible. Does anyone have a railroad to run a Ps-4 on? Should we work with Bombadier to build a fleet of Crescent Limited passenger cars as well? Perhaps Amtrak could be brought into this venture. A "modern" Ps-4 complete with welded boiler, roller bearings, computerized controls, etc. coupled to a retrolook fleet of cars with NFL bearings, electric disc brakes, HEP, etc. It would be capable of 80 mph and could serve as an Amtrak PR tool for "experiencing the golden era of railroading". Who'll offer up the first million dollars? And where should we build this locomotive? China? (waking up from dream) Did I really write this? aw90h@cs.com |

Building a new engine is the easy part. The problems are in coaling $tations and water tower$ (water colum$). And the time required to fill a tender on a tight Amtrak schedule. I have been on several steam excursions that ran hours late with photo runs etc. But lately Amtrak has them all beat with trains 18 to 20 hrs. late. The PS-4 is safe - concentrate on having the Chinese build a NYC Hudson or a PRR T-1, or maybe a Hiawatha. Actually,the Brits have been smart enough to use their lottery proceeds to restore and operate steam locomotives and tourist lines. If our government took historical preservation as a public matter rather than relying on private funds, imagine what we could rebuild and run! glueck@saturn.caps.maine.edu |

About 18 months ago, the head of the FRA was at Union for the introduction of the new stamps showing Ted Rose's paintings, including the one of the J3 Hudson. She asked "Do you have any of those at IRM?" and when I explained that none had been saved, her comment was "We should have one built." I told her that it would probably be about a $1.5-2 million job, and her comment was that there was a lot of Federal money floating around out there--but I've yet to see a check arrive in my mailbox! Here's an idea. Since the folks at Steamtown get beat up on the large number of Canadian locomotives in the collection, they should be allowed to "build" a locomotive characteristic of the northeast. Perhaps a J-3 Hudson would be the choice. Is there a complete set of drawings for one of these NYC Hudsons in existence? If we have the drawings, we can certainly proceed with pattern costs, casting costs, machining costs, boiler costs, etc. Given enough seed money, I would think a pretty good cost estimate to build one could be developed. I would suggest making all the drawings into an electronic format (such as Autocad) so that any changes could be done easily. It will help with the transmission of information and the development of CNC programming. Would one be enough or should we go for two? aw90h@cs.com |
