Post subject:  Operating Crews for the 2002 Winter Games

Down the line a bit many of you will notice a thread that speaks mainly to the issue of professional courtesy,( by the way, we do support this type of program) rather being able to operate or participate at another railroad while you are visiting or traveling. Allen also commented that he wanted to know if there were areas where one could donate one week of time at any given time. May we, the Heber Valley Railroad present this idea to all of you who come across these pages as something to consider.

The HVRR will run trains to transport spectators during the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City beginning in January of 2002 and running through March of 2002. Our operating schedule is very ambitious. We will operate trains each day of the games beginning at 7:00 a.m. and not finishing until as late as 10:00 p.m. in some cases. Our current "Operating Department" is made up of over 40 employees/volunteers. Some come for a week at a time, others come one day a week, others come three days a week every other week, and the list goes on and on.

The challenge I have as the Chief Mechanical Officer and Scheduling Coordinator is this: Though we have a great group, there is no way we can run such a schedule on the number of people we have. Each train will need at least 5 operating department employees for each train, we will field two train sets per day! Keep in mind all of these trains will run steam power. Thus, we will have a twenty four shop (at least that is what we project at this point) plus at least three operating crews per day per train set! Now add in the fact that we will be doing this for 30 plus days straight......we need a few extra people.

The current plan is to allow others to come and participate. I hereby propose that if any of you have firing experience or if you have conducting experience and if you think you that may want to participate, I would enjoy hearing from you. I am NOT looking for engineers!

This is how this will happen. I am looking for a letter from you on some type of Railroad letterhead stating your interest and desire to participate for any time during the 2002 Winter Games. State your experience and list a contact other than yourself.

I November of 2001, I will send bid sheets to our current Operating Employees. Once they have requested the days they want, I will begin to select from the letters I have received to fill the remaining holes in the schedule. Our employees/volunteers will get first pick. We will also invite many of our friends that may not read this to participate as well.

So, here you go. Please do not e-mail me, or reply to this message unless you have questions. If you are interested, send a letter to me at the following address:

As a side note, I have received a few letters. If you really think you want in, I need to know soon! Please keep in mind that I am doing the best I can to reply as soon as possible to requests.

Regards,

John E. Rimmasch
