 Post subject: Preserved BL-2's? *PIC*
PostPosted: Wed Feb 21, 2001 4:09 pm

Pardon the ignorance on my part, but what has happened to all those BL-2's that the BAR had into the early 1980's? I know at least a couple have been preserved (one, #57 I believe, was returned to her original #557 number and paint scheme), but what about the others? Didn't Glen Monhardt (sp.?) have one or two as well? If this is the case, would his estate be willing to do something along the lines of the deal that NCTM worked out over ACL #501? Those of us in the Thumb of Michigan might like to see one of those
painted in, oh, say, C&O colors.........

Two of the former BAR BL2s are still at Janesville, WI parked next to the WSOR roundhouse. They were both owned by Mr. Monhart and I believe they are up for sale through the estate. One is in BAR blue and yellow and the other is lettered for the fictional Janesville and Southeastern. An A-B-A lash-up of F units painted in WICT colors (IC-like) keep them company. All five units need to be preserved and (best case scenario) OPERATED for future generations to enjoy.

Wayne County PA Chamber of Commerce bought BAR 54 for excursion service over the Lackawaxen and Stourbridge RR, an ex-Erie branch between Lackawaxen and Honesdale. They have retained BAR's attractive grey and red paint on the unit.

Does anyone know how to contact the Monhardt estate, or what they are asking for the units?

Thanks,

If any group in Michigan wanted to acquire one of those units I know of a small museum in Michigan that would store and operate them. We would just have to step up the fight with CN to reestablish our connection. be a worthwhile endeavor.

Dave, how did I know you guys would step up for one of those at MTM? If there are enough of us out there, maybe we should really look at this. I mean, heck, there aren't many of these ugly-ducklings left!

MTM would be a nice place for the ex-Fort Street Union Depot NW5 that the Florida Gulf Coast RR Museum has available. The major problem seems to be its lack of traction motors, but if one were to hook its generator up to, say, some subway cars...

'sure would be nice to bring that loco home.

Well I am the new Director of Research and Development for the MTM. So by default, I am the one to talk to. Our museum does have some experience mating electric cars to diesel locomotives. Depending on the status of our 4000 series El cars we may need something to mate with the South Shore car (11)11 coming to us from the East Troy group. when I have more time I will be sure to look into this. If anyone has further information please e-mail me.

Over a year ago I was going to buy the NW5 and bring it north. The unit aside from not having traction motors has a broken crankshaft and needs rewired and alot of work. I had made a deal to buy it for $10,000 and then ship it up here to Ohio. It was going to cost about $1,200 to $1,500 to have someone down there get it ready to move. Then CSXT gave me a rate of $6,500 to move it to Ohio and I said "thats enuff!" and forgot about the deal. I was going to buy the engine with my own money, and in my opinion 10k was too much for that hulk, but because of its rarity I agreed to the price. But after getting socked with that ridiculous rate for moving it, I could not see the logic in spendin that much and still having to change out a 12-567 prime mover, install four traction motors, and rewire the unit. Oh well, you win some, you lose some.
