Update to the wooden boxcar still sitting unclaimed in Enola, near Harrisburg, Pa.: Danbury RR Museum and Strasburg RR have both passed on the car. Whether or not the RR Museum of Pennsylvania is interested or not, they are not in the position to be able to claim the car, as they have a self-imposed moratorium on accepting any further equipment until vitally-necessary renovation is done on the yard trackage outside the Museum--a yearlong, million-dollar project, I was told. It was implied that nothing short of a "Holy Grail" (a Reading T1, an Alco PA, the Baldwin Sharks, etc.) could be accepted there for the time being. Firsthand reports indicate that the car is potentially salvageable, although considered enough of a "wreck" that even the car restoration crew at the Strasburg RR (which is known to lust after wooden cars as if they were hot-fudge sundaes) passed on it. There IS a similar car in more intact and better condition at the Central Pa. Chapter NRHS station in White Deer, Pa., and PRR experts have confirmed the existence of at least one more of these cars along an ex-PRR rail line. Previously, I heard from individuals and museums in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois expressing an interest in this car. This message is to tell them to pursue this car AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. I am with the Phillipsburg Railroad Historians and we have sent a letter to NS about the car for our museum. The reply has not come from NS but it has been only about 2 weeks. lvrr@enter.net |
