To accompany the other message below, regarding the Lynchburg Kanawha, I visited the four steamers at the Virginia Scrap Iron Company in Roanoke.

I have seen worse in parks! Only one loco was readily available to gain access to, but none of the four are beyond hope, from what I could observe. I do not expect to see any of them running in the near future, but we are not talking about hopeless locomotives. We are talking about a complete and serious rebuild from the tires up to the stack.

I will post the photos that I did get in a few days, provided a website will allow me the space.

Other good news includes that the owner of the scrap yard is not going to scrap the engines at all. He is seeking a home for all four, but would like them placed locally, if possible. I did not get into a discussion about prices, but the manager of the yard was polite, welcomed the discussion, and indicated that what was required to access the locomotives was the price of moving them. VSI&M cut up a lot of old N&W steam in the past. No, there are no parts laying around the yard - I asked! The two old Baldwin Diesels and articulated tenders remain outside the yard as well. A string of derelect hoppers are stranded in the yard behind the locomotives.

Getting to view the locos is a bit chancey, as it requires crossing some private land, but I want to stress that asking for permission at the main office was greatly appreciated by the management of the scrap yard.

I'll be more than happy to post your photos on my "Lost Engines of Roanoke" web site. Been a while since I had the chance to get down there, and it's about time I did another update. I hear they cleared some of the brush around the three engines inside the fence, so I'm looking forward to seeing your photos!

Our historical society would be interested in participating in the removal of the locomotives/hopper cars for preservation. However, first we have to find a suitable location for storage of the pieces. Please keep us advised.

Greetings,

This was posted on the Lost Locomotives board:

Okay, I got a commitment: if by chance this group or anyone connected
to it should happen to get their hands on the *Lost Engines* and other
rolling stockat Virginia Scrap Iron, we've now got a storage
facility offered where they'll be safe, ina fenced and guarded
railroad enclosure, just off a Norfolk Southern line, the most likely
way they'll get out of the boneyard they're now sitting in.

Details available to anyone interested on request.

I hope this helps!
