Does anyone have the EXACT location for the ex-Chicago Side Side Elevated Forney loco in Cuba? Please let me know, as one of our members hopes to visit it next week.

Dear Kevin:
Former South Side Rapid Transit 0-4-4RT, No. 42, BLW c/n13048 built 1892, lettered 2 de Abril, is displayed in the open near Mill No. 639 "Fernando de Dios" which is in Holguin province, about 30 kms. due east of the provinical capitol city also named Holguin. Holguin province is out at the east end of Cuba and boarders Guantanamo province.

::According to "Industrial Steam Locomotives of Cuba", by Graham Leach, the engine, BLW 13048 of 1892, is at Central Fernando de Dios. There is a photo taken in 1990, of the engine, preserved behind a wire fence. Central Fernando de Dios is in Holguin province, near the town of Tacajo, about 45 km east of the city of Holguin. Chris Skow's TUT tour will pass through Holguin, on the way to Rafael Freyre. Your friend could be dropped off at a hotel in Holguin by the tour, where he could hire a taxi, drive to Fernando de Dios, and then continue on to Guardalavaca, where the tour is staying. It is less then two hours from Holguin to Guardalavaca.

He could also hire a taxi at the hotel in Guardalavaca, skip some of the Rafael Freyre visit and go down and back. There might be a fairly direct road from Rafael Freyre down to Fernando de Dios, since Altuna on the Rafael Freyre line is only about 20km due north of Fernando de Dios. Unfortunately, the direct roads are probably all dirt and may be difficult, especially in wet weather. One of the tour members has a complete set of color maps, photo copied from the "Atlas de Cuba" that he is taking along on the trip, so you should be able to plot out your route with his help.

Hope this helps.
