Well, it is time for me to select a topic for my senior thesis. My advision and I decided the Army Transportation Coprs would be an interesting idea. Does anybody know of a good book or two dealing with the Corps, specifically their rail operations? Any help would be most appreciated. David Wilkins wilkidm@wku.edu |

The Transportation Corps railroad story from 1862 to 1953 is told in "Railroading in Eighteen Countries" by Carl R. Gray, Jr. It was published by Scribner's in 1955 and should be avialable in large libraries. Most of it is about World War II. Museum of Transportation rdgoldfede@aol.com |

One interesting book about the activities of WWII comes out of England and is generally involved with the locomotives. In fact it is the combination of two seperate books done by the author about both the British and American locomotives. It is: Allied Military Locomotives of the Second World War by R. Tourret (first published 1976 and 1977, revised and augmented for republishing in 1995) Tourret Publishing 5 Byron close Abingdon, Oxon OX14 5PA Great Britain I recently purchased a new copy from a British bookstore that listed it on either abebooks.com or bibliofind.com. Also I would suggest that you address your question to the US Army Transportation Museum located at Fort Eustis. It is located at Building 300, Washington Blvd., Fort Eustis, Virginia. Hi David, You should be able to glean some additonal information from these books: "Light Railway of the First World War", by W.J.K Davies, pub by David & Charles "Narrow Gauge at War", by Keith Taylorson, pub by Plateway Press (I believe there is also a Vol. 2 but I do not have it.) "French Minor Eailways", by W.J.K. Davies, pub by David & Charles "Narrow Gauge to No Man's Land", by Richard Dunn, pub by Benchmark publications You might also want to check with the National Infantry Museum at Fort Benning, Georgia. I would definately look up that Ft. Eustis site. http://www.eustis.army.mil/ Among other things, it invites you to email the Trans. Corps (TC) Command Historian. There are links to the TC Museum and Army Historical Links. I do a lot of military history research in my day job and strongly suggest you search the phrase "railway operating battalion" in a search engine such as yahoo. This will give you links to the 1205th TROB, one of two current USAR ROB's (there are no active units) and to the veterans' associations of many deactivated ROB's from WWII, Korea and the Cold War. 1205th Transportation Railway Operating Bn. |

David, along with all the book recommendations, you might also look at this web page which gives a glimpse at goings on at Ft. Eustis in the early to mid 1950s: http://donross.railspot.com/dr109.htm. I remember having visited the Ft. Eustis site directly after I found this one but it did not show much of the details Don Ross is reporting. This might be a nice add-on resource for you.
