Other relects of the steam age which seem to remain abundant are locomotive coaling towers. For whatever reason, either conversion to sanding towers or the fact that demolition is prohibitively difficult or expensive, these beautiful old structures seem to have remained charmed against the wreckers ball. Is there a file or location to collect images of extant coaling tipples?

I don't know of a specific site, but the few remaining on the old Pere Marquette line's can be found at the Pere Marquette Historical Society
website (in the links section).

In addition, there is an old PRR Coaling Tower standing along US-23 just above Marion, Ohio. I think that is NS trackage now, is it not?

You are right it is old PRR. Others I know of that may or may not be there today are.

N&W(now NS) Vicker, VA, Farm, WV,Bluefield, WV.
Williamson, WV, and maybe more.
C&O Gladstone(?), Thurmond, and maybe more, particulary on Big Sandy (Paintsville perhaps)

C&TS has old wooden coaling tower.
Interesting idea for a web site...unfortunately like so many old interesting railroad items, the list will continue to shrink!

The New Haven's 600-ton concrete "tub" coal pocket (as it was known) still looms over the old engine terminal at Cedar Hill Yard in New Haven, CT. The engine terminal is now a lumber reload area. The coal pocket is quite visible from I-91 as well as from Amtrak's Boston-NY line-- yes, Acela passengers could look up from their laptops and lattes and see that railroad Stonehenge. Do any of them wonder what it is?

All the above I mentioned are concrete except the one I mentioned that was wooden. I don't think there is another wooden one to be found in the U.S. is there?

I just thought of another one, which is on the ex-L&N in Northern Tennessee at Chaska, on Duff Mountain Grade. I got the CSX F's going through it once, as it stradles one line of two there. At least it did in 1988! Again Concrete!

A pair of concrete ones stand on the old IC north of Gibson City, IL.

READING COMPANY, Saucon Creek Engine Terminal, Hellertown, PA (just south of Bethlehem) 2-silo concrete. Still standing... but maybe not for long as the property owners are dismantling the six-stall brick roundhouse next to it. (R.C.T.& H.S. has saved the 100 ft turntable and will install it at future museum site) This is the last Reading roundhouse, and was the site where, over the winter of 1976-77, T-1 # 2101 was transformed from American Freedom Train to Chessie Steam Special. The coaling tower can be seen from I-78.

LEHIGH VALLEY mainline, Coxton Yard between Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, MONSTER concrete coaling tower with SOME COAL CHUTES STILL INTACT, and I'm told still contains coal!! (Enterprise, beam it over to Steamtown!). Note: active Reading & Northern yard, and tennant R.M. Delavan's Locomotive Shop nearby...trespassers beware!

What I meant to say was: this was the last Reading Roundhouse usable, with tracks and turntable. A similar 6 stall brick roundhouse stands at Cressona, PA, but modified, and no tracks or turntable. In fact the table is at the RR. Museum of PA, Strasburg.
