 Post subject: 6060 and Steam Expo and open firebox doors
PostPosted: Mon Apr 09, 2001 11:24 am

Hi all;

I just (re)watched a video about Harry Home and 6060 - when he and Al Broadfoot and a bunch of volunteers got 6060 to SteamExpo '86 in Vancouver, they ran through with the firedoor open.

My question is, Why?

6060 is an oil burner, and had new bricks installed, btw.

Maybe they LIKE pulling out leaking flues and replacing them?

Seriously, sometimes you might crack open the door slightly, but I've never seen anybody run with them open.

Don't have the answer to your question but I can vouch for the new firebrick in 1986, as I videotaped them putting in some. As I remember it was a father and son team that was hired for that work. We were there for the last 10 days of the restoration, and it was incredible how much was done in such a short time. We did an article in L&RP in issue 3 or 4 I believe. In our video we did not show the SteamExpo itself, ending with 6060's arrival in Thornton Yard.

Rocky Mountain Rail Society has a website. Why not contact them, and ask the question about the firebox. They can get word to Harry for you as well. I saw them in 1999 at Stettler. Harry's still going strong.

This is directly from a member of the Rocky Mountain Railway Society who was very active in the organization at the time,

The reason they ran with the door open was that the boot doors were in terrible condition and they didn't have time to re build them. It wasn't draughting properly. A whole new boot was installed at Vancouver. The doors have since been replaced twice.
