Post subject:  Whatever happened to the Muskingum Electric??

I just saw a message posted on this board asking an extremely good question: what is the current status of the Muskingum Electric? I don't know a whole lot about the Muskingum, except that it is some sort of industrial operation near Zanesville Ohio. They once had a bunch of modern, remote-control GE ignitron-rectifier locomotives. Does anyone know if the Muskingum is still operating, and if so if they're still using electrics, AND if so if they're still using the old "misshapen brick" GE's?

The last time Ive seen the Muskingum Electric was this past Feb. One electric engne and about 15 cars were still making frequent shuttles from the loading point to the prep plant, but has not been operated as a remote control engine for a long time. An operator (engineer) does the push-pull move essentially on his own. As far as I know the railroad stopped operation shortly aftr the Central Ohio Coal Co. shutdown in March, 2001. But just read today that this mine as well as a few others are to be sold to Consol Energy, so who knows what the future will hold.........
