Would someone involved in the B&M 494 Restoration please tell us what a restoration to "Rolling Condition" is? How is this differnt from a cosmetic restoration, or a operational restoration? Also, how closely does the locomotive resemble its as built self? Did it come equipped with air brakes? Thanks in advance. wilkidm@wku.edu |

Rolling condition essentially means that the journals and other parts of the running gear have been polished and greased so that the locomotive may be rolled without causing damage to the bearings. Display locomotives develop rust on the lower sides of the journals -- when the engine is rolled even a half turn of the wheels, this corrosion is ground into the bearings above and damages them. Depending on what has been found on No. 494, the decision on just how "rollable" it will be will be made. If there is enough pitting on the journals or damage to the bearings (it has been outdoors for most of 50 years or longer and has been moved before, it will probably be "rollable" for only short distances. The idea of rollable 4-4-0s as portable displays is not new. The Burlington's No. 35, the NYC's No. 999, the NP's No. 684, CP's 374 and CN's No. 40 were all towed around for publicity purposes from the 1930s on. The White River Jct. group plans to make No. 494 look like an operable engine, stopping short only of major boiler and running gear repairs. When completed, it should be a shining example of how a display locomotive is supposed to look. > Would someone involved in the B&M 494 > Restoration please tell us what a > restoration to "Rolling Condition" > is?
