Does anyone know much about the former Philadelphia & Reading wooden combination car that was stored at Cass Scenic Railway in WVa for years? I understand that it rotted to oblivion and was disassembled about ten years ago. I was trying to track down its history, road number, builder, how it ended up at Cass, etc. Any information would be appreciated! Thanks.

Kurt,

The Cass roster lists this combine as a 60 foot car built during the 1880's. The exact year and builder is unknown. It was later sold to the Buffalo Creek & Gauley RR. It was last rostered on the BC&G as X-15 and was used on their wreck train as a kitchen/dining car. The car came to Cass in May 1967 as a donation from Pittston Coal. After years on the dead line, the roof caved in and later it was a victim of arson. What's left still lingers on the dead line along the Durbin Line north of town.
