The highway bill reauthorization was approved by the US Senate yesterday with the Transportation Enhancements program intact and fully funded. One floor amendedment was made yesterday to cut 1/3 of the enhancements budget but it was defeated--both the Senate and House versions now include the full Enhancements funding.However, the bill now goes to a Senate-House conference committee, and President Bush is still threatening to veto any bill l that tops the $284 billion in his budget--the Senate version is $295 billion. The House also earmarked a great deal more than the Senate. Conference committees are unpredictable and Enhancements is still an attractive target if they end up cutting the bill back to $284 billion. Stay tuned. |
