In San Jose, serving, incredibly, as a train station, with most of its historic character intact:http://naphotos.nerail.org/showpic/?photo=200505181412566651.jpg&bydate%3A21http://naphotos.nerail.org/showpic/?photo=200505181411326363.jpg&bydate%3A22 |

Thank you for posting those image links Bob.This is a very neat little depot that is truely "people-sized".I feel very fortunate and privileged to live near this restored gem. Here is one transportation and historicial project that was truly done right. This restoration job even extends to the former SP Baggage wing that is located just south of the main depot. This has every appearance of a very complete restoration job that is STILL USED for its intended purpose! That is a very amazing feat in this modern era.By the way, for those from out of the area, here is a complete list of passenger carriers that use this depot. It hosts a rather large variety of rail equipment too. Here is that list:Amtrak (Coast Starlight - long distance), Amtrak Capitol Corridor (Sacramento to San Jose) Altamont Commuter Express (Stockton to San Jose), Caltrain(San Francisco to San Jose with peak hour service south to Gilroy CA). Union Pacific rolls past this depot with their handful of daily throught freights operating over the former Southern Pacific Coast Line. These freights run mainly from Roseville or Oakland to the Los Angeles area. The former SP Coast Line north of Santa Clara (west bay side) is primarily used by Caltrain with only 2 local freights per day operating over that piece of railroad. The equipment used is the Amtrak superliners, Amtrak California Cars/ 2nd generaton Surfliner cars that are painted in the Amtrak California scheme, Bombardier (tri-level commuter cars) for Caltrain (Baby Bullet trains), and the real classics the Caltrain versions of the "Chicago style" Gallery cars.--- Daniel |

Don't forget the VTA Vasona Light Rail line past Campbell running beneath it! (Will it stop there?) The station's namesake (in current times), Rod Diridon, is responsible for the system. While its patronage may be in question, I plan on giving a try to this extension as a "Good Citizen" of Santa Clara County when it opens in a few months. This depot was a fine place to pick up a commute train whenever and wherever on the Peninsula I needed to take it. It's a shame its counterpart at the other end of the Peninsula commute in San Francisco, and a true architectural gem, got the wrecking ball. For a time a fairly 'seedy' establishment prior to the restoration work being completed. It's nice to see it looking so good. |
