Several reasons: (1) Cost (clear plex isn't cheap, and Lexan is REALLY not cheap); (2) UV crazing; (3) Moisture condensation on inside--or in our part of the world, little buggies that love to crawl in between layers of anything--leaves the surface looking cruddy.
