I have been contacted by a person who is dealing with the sale of the steamers in Cuba. Mike, this story (and the list) has been talked about extensively here, although the "agent" was in Spain last time I read anything about it. Most of the discussion centered on the well-established laws against buying anything Cuban. As far I know no one has been able to come forward offering any kind of solution to this seemingly insurmountable problem. |

There was a large consensus that the import problem was insurmountable, but this conclusion seemed to be only speculative. Surely there cannot be a prohibition against importing to the U.S., anything that has ever been in Cuba. I have contacted the agent listed in the first post, and he readily provided the import strategy. Essentially, a U.S. buyer would be purchasing the locomotive from a Canadian owner. It sounds feasible, but I would say that it still calls for extreme wariness on the part of a prospective buyer. If importation is feasible, this would seem to be a very significant resource of used locomotives. |
