Here's something from the Altamont Press website. I know these things are unavoidable but this type of thing (while necessary) sure doesn't encourage folks to consider Amtrak - seems almost intentional vagueness by the UP. This is, of course, during the heart of the tourist season. How was track maintenance handled in the old days? I'm guessing not like this.Scott*****UP track maintenance alters summer Amtrak schedules in OregonMaintenance crews from the Union Pacific Railroad will be performing planned trackwork between Portland and Eugene, Oregon. The work will occur between Wednesday, Jun01 and Tuesday, Aug02 and will require periodic 10-hour "work windows" when train service is suspended. As a result, during scheduled work periods, Amtrak passenger trains traveling through Oregon will be delayed and/or trips will be terminated. In cases where trips are annulled, passengers will be provided with substitute bus service. During the dates listed below, Amtrak Cascades trains #504 and #509 will not operate; passengers will be bused between Portland and Eugene. The Coast Starlight (trains #11 and #14) will operate during this time, but will be delayed approximately two hours in each direction to accommodate the work window. Planned Work Schedule:Wednesday, Jun01 through Wednesday, Jun08 Thursday, Jun16 through Thursday, Jun23 Friday, Jul01 through Thursday, Jul07 Saturday, Jul16 through Saturday, Jul23 Monday, Aug01 and Tuesday, Aug02During the times when crews are not working, Amtrak trains will operate, but may be delayed due to temporary speed restrictions and the resulting train congestion. Prior to heading to the station, passengers are encouraged to contact Amtrak at 1-800-USA-RAIL or visit www.Amtrak.com for accurate train status information. - The Grants Pass News, courtesy Larry W.
