Looking for information on maintenance and repair of a "Westinghouse traction brake regulator" (feed valve). This device is on a streetcar built in 1914 and rebuilt about '32. Don't have any part or model number, but it looks similar to a device in an old National Air Brake Co. catalog. |

Sounds like this may be a C-6 feed valve. The Association of Railway Museums, railwaymuseums.org, has a reprint availble, The Feed Valve Code of Tests, covering this formerly common steam road and interurban valve. Gord McOuatHalton County Radial Ry. |

I think I found the answer. It's a type "J".Located a manual in the library at MOT which covers the C6 and the J.The C6 is a feed valve and the J is an electro-pneumatic pressure regulatorwhich controls an electrically driven compressor. The car in question has straight air only, so there is no need for a feed valve. Thanks for the reply. |

Glad you were able to find the info on the Type J compressor governors Danska. I have additional manuals and parts lists on these if you need copies.Regards,Gord |

Sure it is a "J" and not a "S-16?" The "J" is typically used for large cars such as interurbans. The S-16 compressor governor was typcially used for smaller cars. Both of these have similar looking covers, but are of different sizesThe S-16 appears to have its start with a National design of about a hundred years ago that Westinghouse Traction refined. |

I think earlier S-type governors (S-6 maybe?) had semi-circular covers like the earlier Type J's but I think the S-16 looks quite a bit different. IRM uses both types on our interurban cars and they seem to be interchangeable; I know Type J's are used on everything from 1906 heavy interurbans to 1924 lightweight streetcars.
