I was recently told that at least one DL&W pacific survived at least into the mid 50's, which would've been 2 years past the 1953 dieselization. What engine? How did it make it and when was it scapped?

My resident (ex-roommate) Lackawanna authority says half in jest, "Oh, sure, we parked it in the cave right next to the NYC Hudson, the Pennsy T1, and the Erie Pacific."He's never heard of the alleged save. So unless something comes up with anything better, I think we can lump this in the "legend" category.

Just a minute! In the book "THE LACKAWANNA IN COLOR" by David Sweetland on Page 28 is a photo of Pacific # 1121. The caption reads" "4-6-2 1121 did not immediately go to Keyser Valley for scrapping, but to Newark, NJ to provide steam as a portable boiler. Photographed on September 7th, 1953, 1121 worked several months in this role at Bordens Milk plant, and later at the American foods plant in Morris Plains, NJ". How much "later" she performed is not mentioned.

Alexander, I'm not asserting that the engine existed beyond the mid-50's, just that it existed beyond its DL&W service life. My guess is that the damage wrought by Hurricane Diane? in 1955 would probably havedoomed the engine, as the Lackawanna would've liquidated anything of value in order to get cash for rebuilding.

This morning, while rooting through my files of Trains magazine on another matter, I came across a photo of DL&W 1121 providing steam to the American Foods plant at Morris Plains, NJ on page 9 of the July 1955 issue. The cutline indicates the photo was taken in January 1955. The engine was minus main rods, headlight and number plate.
