Kahului 12 has been running with the aid of a diesel on point of 4-5 car trains, though some days in the 2 weeks the new operation has been running have seen only steam (3 cars), or only diesel, as there is no obviously no additional steam (or any) power otherwise on hand for the times the 12 is cold for whatever reason. The new crew has mounted a dashboard hula girl atop its headlight. The GLR Inc. operates their steam locomotives down the highway at the Colorado Railroad Museum on select dates, and also runs the Royal Gorge Route in Canon City with scenery perhaps even more unique than the Loop itself. The #8 is on display in front of the company offices in Georgetown. The company owns the building and the land outright, and also, CHS/RLR will not be opening a ticket office in G-Town.http://www.royalgorgeroute.com/So in essence, the Georgetown Loop Railroad did shut down, and a new operation has taken its place on their rails. There will be a write-up about it in the next On Track e-zine issue.A little history on the KRR 12, it was shipped to the Bay Area (Port of SF I believe) about 1967 and stored for a time with ex-Hawaii Ry #5 along the muddy shores of a 6' deep San Francisco Bay in Alviso (Santa Clara). Bob Keller moved both locomotives (he operated the 5 in South Lake Tahoe for a time) to Chama when he operated the C&TS, and sold the 12 to Silverwood's owner, who had it rebuilt by Stan Matthews' Shop Services in Iowa, where it received its current boiler. |
