I did want to mention that among the items we changed on No.12 before going into service was the fabrication of a new oil pan and installation of all new bricks in the firebox. We found that the fire pan was not the original and at some point it had been altered in a fashion which dramatically closed off the air flow, it also only had one damper in the front. A new larger pan was fabricated and we added a rear damper. We fell this has helped greatly in the performance of the engine. The running gear is in good shape and will get us through the season. It is planned that this winter the running and valve gear will be completly rebuilt.Allthough our little teakettle has her limitations she is a great steamer and we will not in any way force her to work beyond her limits. This of course means a lower capacity train for the time being, which is why CHS is ardently spending funds on the aquisition of more locomotives. |
