Post subject:  V&T "Reno" discussion

Starting with a visitor to Old Tucson who was upset at this 4-4-0s condition there (he gets a little carried away). Mention is made again a bit down the thread of conversion of the Reno's boiler to compressed air operation, yet no one over the years has detailed just what was or wasn't done with this. Has anyone here actually visited the the engine to see whether the compressed air conversion was actually attempted, or is this just a railfan rumor being reprinted again and again?

The following was provided to me by Kyle Wyatt, Curator of History & Technology at the California State Railroad Museum:
Quote:
I saw the locomotive after the fire in the mid 1990s. It definitely was converted. The air compressor was in the baggage car behind the locomotive. They raised the roof in order to do it. As I recall, I think a reservoir was in the tender.
