I would like to know IF,,,, any equipment from the Steamtown collection has moved from Tobbanhanna, Pa. If so to WHERE,, to what Museum, ETC. thank you Pat. cherif@mediaone.net |

I was up that way a few weeks ago, and I heard that nothing had moved, mainly because most of it will come to Steamtown before going on or being otherwise disposed of. And... Nothing has moved from the graveyard at Tobyhanna yet. Track equipment arrived for the rebuilding of the Steamtown storage yard tracks about an hour ago (6/4/01) so it will be some time before most of it comes down. A few pieces of equipment at Tobyhanna have already been stenciled for their new owners. In other news, Steamtown has begun disposing of the "surplus" equipment that hasn't yet been adopted. A few weeks ago steamtown scrapped an ancient B&M wooden combine on the site. What is so shocking is that items such as hand rails, brake rigging and trucks were all cut up. These were items that could have been used by places like the Strasburg RR that operate similar coaches. I was amazed at the efforts taken to destroy all usable pieces of this car. I've never seen someone take the time to cut axles and truck center castings in half before. It was the first but I'm sure it won't be the last. It was done quickly and out of public view. You mentioned some of the equipment has been stenciled for the new owners. Can you tell us who is buying what, so we can see what chances there are for some stuff being operational some day. It would be ashame to see this equipment go to scarp, i am sure that some museums will come to the come forward and take some of this equipment to a better home, lets all hope it is very soon, F.Nelson Blount did what he had to do, Now hopefully, that some museums will step in and help. The former Milwaukee Road FP7 that currently is painted for the Western Maryland as #97A is owned by a private individual who plans to part it out for the benefit of at least two other F-units. The overall condition is poor at best as I understand it. There is some talk of making the carbody into an office or something, but there is no reasonable way to restore it to working order. The other F7 (former KCS) has a new owner and will reportedly move from Tobyhana sometime this summer. Was the scrapped ex-B&M car the one that came from the St. J & L C? If so, I believe it was wood-framed and very old. It was kept at the Shelburne Museum for some years, then went to the Champlain Valley NRHS in Burlington, VT, where it deteriorated behind the Union Station for a while before being sent down to Steamtown in Bellows Falls to deteriorate further. What a sad ending for such a historic old car, meeting its fate at about the same time as the St. J & L C itself is to be destroyed. bobyar2001@yahoo.com |

Hello I'm not sure of the lineage of the car. I can describe it as a standard design wooden car, painted red. It was missing steps on all sides and for some reason it had smoked glass windows installed. I can't say for sure that it was the St.J&LC car though, I was under the impression that it was ex B&M. One thing for certain.. It was a ridiculously stupid move to cut up the trucks and other hardware, especially when other truckless carbodies are being restored. bobyar2001@yahoo.com |
