Anyone know the current status of the PRR Crestline roundhouse? It is still standing, but missing all its windows, doors, tracks, and is in generally deplorable condition. I saw it a few days ago and it is just standing there with no fence around it or no signs etc. Kinda odd.

Rick:

I try to swing by there whenever I'm in Ohio. The first couple of times I was there the place was wide open, no "no trespassing" signs or anything. The last time I was there, last summer, the entrances were blocked off with telephone poles across the dirt roads, and keep out signs staked in the ground, but this didn't keep the locals out, who were fishing in the turntable pit.

That facility must have been quite a site in its time. I'll always mentally associate the Crestline roundhouse with that story in Trains Magazine (10 years ago?) where they ran the T-1 up as fast as it would go, with a large train in tow. That trip went thru, or started in Crestline I believe.

The roundhouse is privately owned, I don't know by who, and the property is for sale. I seriously doubt the structure could be saved in any meaningful fashion, it's so far gone. Maybe could take the bricks and build a smaller roundhouse.

There is a museum in town that supposedly has pictures of the roundhouse, and two former roundhouses in Crestline, but its never open when I pass thru.

I have been building an HO layout of the PRR so Crestline has been a major sightseeing trip for me. About 15 years ago, being a pilot I filmed everything from the air. At that time the turn table was still there. I also have many photos of the area. I was told that one of the scrap dealers in Crestline owns all of the property (I have had dogs after me there). One of the photos I have is from the fourties during a strike (I was told). I can see close to 30 locomotives! What a wonderful place it must have been. Dennis H.

Hmmm, sounds like a good brief or article opportunity.
