I know Steamtown let go of some locomotives over the last decade such as CP 2816 and CN 5288.But are there any more that they may be willing to part with?Would Steamtown be better off with fewer locos?I would like to see the Rahway Valley 2-8-0 back in Tennessee in it's as built Oneida & Western livery. |

Oh, c'mon, tell us what you REALLY want to do.We could play all day with "would/could/should" semantics; that's beside the point. In the case of CANADIAN National 5288 and CANADIAN Pacific 2816, both locomotives were determined to be outside the collections parameters of Steamtown, and were offered up for de-accession. We've since seen the spectacular results with 2816, and I have faith in TVRM to do something worthwhile with 5288, irritating as it may be to Canadian fans.Steamtown still continues to use Canadian locos as operable demonstration locomotives, true. But a case can be made for "consuming" an "expendable" relic rather than "using up" an actual American relic.Rahway Valley 2-8-0 15 fills a perfect little niche as a stereotype, typical ordinary short line 2-8-0--something that deserves to be displayed at Steamtown. Now, by typical museum curatorial/archive standards, one doesn't de-accession an actual artifact of this nature without asking for a trade for an artifact somehow deemed equally or more suitable to the organization. Translation: Steamtown shouldn't let you have that loco unless you come up with something perceived to be "better" in trade.Let's see, what can the O&W fans in Tennessee come up with for trading? SR 154 in Knoxville? Smoky Mountain 107 in Pigeon Forge?http://www.steamlocomotive.info/vlocomotive.cfm?Display=1149http://www.steamlocomotive.info/vlocomotive.cfm?Display=1147Sorry, just ain't looking likely, unless there are a LOT more O&W fans than I think. Just be glad 15's at Steamtown and not in some field in Medford, Oregon. |

I haven't made it to Steamtown but hope to one day. I've never understood the U.S. versus Canadian thing. Canadian Pacific and Canadian National have operated in the northeastern U.S. since way back in the 1800's using equipment (and employees) from both countries. Today they serve a good deal more of this country and CP operates the Delaware & Hudson through Scranton. (never mind the Great Northern, White Pass, NYC, Wabash and others on both sides of the border; BNSF, NS, CSX still do). Most of the locomotive builders in some way worked both countries. So how is it that CP or CN steam at Steamtown is considered by many to be "foreign"? Mike |

One could argue (and I will) that RV 15 is more pertinent to the site than many of the locomotives at Steamtown. The 15 was operated in NJ on a road that connected with the Lackawanna AND the 15 received a major overhaul in Scranton at the DL&W erecting shop across the street from Steamtown. One might say the engine is much more valuable representing the Lackawanna and its shortline connections than an obscure railroad 'down south. Of course like all the display engines at Steamtown, it could use some TLC.Dave Crosby |

ADM,Let us remember that while #5288 may have been off the CN, she was assigned to the Central Vermont for quite a spell, and was as likely to be in White River Junction as she was in Toronto. That's the one Canadian deaccession from Steamtown I disagreed with. Well, and CPR #1098 as well, since the D-10's were regular power on the CPR in Vermont.Any knee-jerk reaction to Canadian engines in the Steamtown collection, needs to be tempered by an historic accounting of road number and class. In this case, I would argue #5288 was more in line with Steamtown's collection than UP #4012 or the Canadians that stayed. Also it would come as no surprise to say that CP 2317 often ran over the CP's International of Maine Division. And often during the winter month's the CN would lease the Central Vermont 2-8-2's, meaning that the 3254 could have run into Vermont. Are these engine's American made, Nope. Did they run in America, yes and are equally part of story set out to be told by Steamtown National Historic Site. Be it a home town Lackawanna 2-6-0 or Canadian built classic, they are all part of the story of American railroading. -Justin Franz |
