I have a few questions? What would it cost to have a boiler built (small narrow gauge), wheels (four 33in drivers and six 20in wheels), steam saddle and cylinders, tires for the wheels and a stack. The rest of the parts could be fabricated in a machine shop from scratch.-Eric

Eric - without knowing any more than what you supply for specs, the short and not particularly helpful answer is between $350,000 and the national GNP. Start saving those pennies now.dave

Well the locomotive would be 2ft gauge and a outside frame 2-4-4 about 30 ft long. The boiler would be 40in in diameter and about 12ft long. I'm not really serious about this (yet) I just wanted to know how out of reach it is. -Eric

You can have an ASME boiler built that is 40" dia 12' long for about $40,000 this is based on the cost of building a smaller one for a steam traction engine that I know was built this past year. It is not impossible to build a locomotive type boiler with the necessary paper work to meet or exceed the FRA specs. The major cost will be the engineering.

That $40,000 estimate is that with the engineering? And by engineering you mean designing the boiler right? What if you were making a copy of another boiler that is around right now? Then wouldn't you only have to make the changes that would be up to ASME code?-Eric

So if I was to design my own locomotive couldn't I use the same basic calculations of the mechanics on other locomotives if I kept the meseaurments and basic dimensions the same? I'm talking about locomotives that are around now that you could go to for the calculations. The boiler on the other hand would have to be designed from scratch. So give me a round-a-bout figure as to how much it would cost to build a new locomotive. The engine would be a two foot gauge outside frame 2-4-4. 30ft long with 20in pony and trailing wheels and 33in drivers. boiler would be 40in in diameter and 12ft long. If anyone if knows of the Wiscasset Waterville & Farmington Railway in Maine I am basing my engine off of their #7. -Eric

Why does the pictured boiler have such a deep side sheet extension along the backhead?

Based on what I know about the costs of several of the locos now under construction, I would estimate a WW&F #7 clone would cost about $600K - $700K. Perhaps less if you could supply a good set of blueprints (which MAY exist) and a lot of the same volunteer effort that went into the restoration of WW&F #10.My Guess-timate,Glenn

Eric,the "Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway" in England, has a 1/2 scale replica of SR&RL #24!im not sure who built it, but you might be able to get some guidance there..and I have heard rumours that someone in the UK wants to build a replica of #23! Thank you all for the info. It has been a great help. Now I don't plan on starting this project anytime soon so don't start spreading rumors that some one is building a replica of WW&F #7. I'm only 17 right now and with my paycheck I could never afford this. Also if I ever did build this locomotive I would make many cosmetic changes to reflect my interests.NOW to just try and locate the Baldwin drawings of #7. Would anyone have an idea of how I would go about doing that? Thanks again -Eric

Yes I am a volunteer with the WW&F but I live in New Jersey. If I were to do this (which I plan to do down the road) this locomotive would be privately owned but would travel to other railroads like the WW&F. I have also heard and confirmed the rumors you have heard about the #23. One thing you didn't know though is that they are building FULL SIZE replicas of the #23 AND #10!!!! They have already started. I found the group and e-mailed them and they sent me back a message saying that they were indeed building these locomotives.-EricP.S. I am going on vacation tomorrow so I wont be able to answer this thread so if anyone else has info for me or question send me a PM and I'll get back to you when I get home.
