All apologies if this was already posted somewhere, but I stumbled upon pics of this handsome ex-CPR 2-8-0 (and former British Columbia 2860 backup) on its first run for the Kettle Valley Railway. Looks like they've done a great job!http://www.kettlevalleyrail.org/firstrun.htmC'mon, the ditch lights aren't that bad... |

Has anyone ever seen old CP in-service photos of the 3716? I never have. |

This is likely as close as you are going to get, just one number off http://www.webpraxis.ab.ca/vrr/steam/ca/cp/pics/VR[lWNgD14wcwE]_3715.jpg |

I couldn't get that URL to work, but shortened it up and navigated through the site to get to this one, from which you can work forward, through Canada, CPR, and 2-8-0s, to find No. 3715. Lots of stuff on that site, thanks for the link. Anyone know when the feedwater heater was added to the 3716? Any photos of it on display at Port Coquitlam, before it was returned to service?http://www.webpraxis.ab.ca/cgi-bin/steam/_mpd/mpd.cgi |

Bob, As a rule these engines never had feedwater heaters in regular service. The steam crew on the British Columbia Railroad made a lot of changes to 3716, including the feedwater heater, ditch lights, and the stainless steel boiler jacket. At the end of steam these engines had a center headlight, and otherwise looked the same as the 3715 photo that was shown. While the feedwater heater is not normal, I think the engine looks better now, with the black boiler jacketing. The tenders were never maroon either, which is a passenger thing, reserved mainly for Hudsons, and some pacifics. Greg SchollPS In 1996 I shot the BCR stuff, and got lucky with both engines in one day. 2860 was on the regular passenger train, and a bit later 3716 arrived on a freight as it was running some break-in runs. It didn't even have any lettering on the tender that day. The Royal Hudson trip was a great loss, as it was one of the best and longest standard gauge steam operations in North America for sure. |
