Nice shot of D&RGW 483, taking coal at Antonito, Colorado on one of the last runs on the narrow gauge before it was abandoned. The 483 was the first of the 2-8-2s used by the C&TS, but has been out of service for many years. The Red Devil coal loader replaced a wooden coal facility in the 1950s and was included as part of the sale to the two states, but was reportedly scrapped by mistake after the C&TS took over.http://www.ngdiscussion.net/cgi-bin/NGD ... read=61814

Post subject:  Alamosa

Caption says Alamosa, and the sanding tower in the background says Alamosa. They had two red devils, one at Antonito and one at Alamosa.

Pays to read the caption. I guess the Alamosa Red Devil was scrapped along with everything else at Alamosa also? Do any Red Devil loaders exist anywhere today? Leadville had a different type, that lasted until the rotary plow was sent to CRRM about 1970. Anyone know if it was scrapped, or might it be rusting in a junkyard somewhere?
