That's an EMC 40 alright. Pretty rare is an understatement.I did a model of one last year and did some fun research in the process. There's a survivors list:http://www.thedieselshop.us/PRSVDemdOthers.HTMLThat accounts for five of the eleven built. This looks like this one:http://www.northeast.railfan.net/images/chs1309.jpgthat makes at least six...more photos at:http://www.northeast.railfan.net/diesel117.htmlTRAINS did a nice frontspiece on this; I think it was July 72 or about that time; a salute to EMD where this was considered the complete oddball.I talked to the museum in York, PA about theirs. It is supposedly still out back under a tarp. The Harley Davidson Orange paint has faded to 'an interesting pink color'. They had no idea what it was, or that it was significant, or even rare. Hopefully I educated them sufficiently that it won't be completely ignored. They were certainly intrigued by the picture of it in the TRAINS magazine article. |

The EMC 40 on the Walkersville Southern (in Frederick County, Maryland) still sees service on occasion. -- Ray |
