Moving the 2-10-2 in Houston, Texas? I know there has been a group at this for several years. Again, they're using the road carrier instead of snap track. Anyone know if the journals have been polished/greased in case the wheels turn? Did the volunteers get it ready for the asbestos contractors or will it be butchered in the abatement process?http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/metropolitan/3258969 |

I was involved with it for quite awhile. The locomotive has been rolled within the last five years. The Texas Railroad Preservation Association was the group working on the locomotive with no assistance from its co-owners the City of Houston and the Houston Junior Chamber of Commerce. Greg Radler usually reads the posts here,so hopefully he can chime in with whether they have been involved in the asbestos removal. Attempts to contact the contractor for the AA have been unsecessful for the moment. I do not know what the arrangement was with the city or the Jaycees concerning were concerning the engine, but there has been quite a tug-of-war going on the last couple years between the groups involved. |

The locomotive is currently being abated. I have been advising the JC's for several months on the project. The contractors are using nibblers and snips to cut away the jacket(s). They will attempt to save the jacket if possible. There will be no jacket put back on at its new location.I met with the movers yesterday. The journals were polished and greased about 10 years ago but will be checked before the move. The new track will be long enough for the engine to be moved a little. Unfortunately not quite a full driver turn. The current move date is the night of August 25. |
